NI 'Waterless' Domestic Properties In Focus

A consultation on proposals to review the provision of financial assistance for domestic properties not served by a water main has been launched by NI's Department for Regional Development (DRD).

It is estimated that there are around 1,200 properties - which are mostly situated in rural areas - not able to access the water mains in Northern Ireland. Speaking on the launch of the consultation, Stormont Regional Development Minister, Conor Murphy said: "I am very aware of the issue of accessing mains water in rural areas and of the challenges faced by those living in rural properties where there is not a water main in the nearest public road."

He said that he had commissioned a review of the existing policy on financial assistance for domestic properties not served by a water main.

"The aim of the review was to consider ways in which people could get access to water mains or to a wholesome water supply.

"The review is now complete and the department would welcome people's views on all of the proposals set out."
