Rodgers attends meeting of UK agriculture Ministers

The Stormont Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development has met with other UK Agriculture Ministers in London as part of the regular programme of meetings to discuss matters of common concern and to agree the UK’s position for forthcoming EU business.

Speaking after the meeting on Wednesday November 15, Bríd Rodgers said: “This was another very useful meeting with Mrs Beckett and my Ministerial colleagues. It is vitally important that the concerns of the Northern Ireland industry can be represented in such a forum and be fully incorporated into UK policy.

“The meeting concentrated primarily on Common Agriculture Policy (CAP) Reform which is of such vital importance to the Northern Ireland industry. I was able to outline the significant cross-border implications of the CAP for Northern Ireland. In addition, I provided position reports on the Foot and Mouth Disease situation here and the Northern Ireland Scrapie Plan.”

The meeting was chaired by the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Mrs Margaret Beckett and was also attended by the Parliamentary Under Secretary in the Lords, Lord Whitty, the Minister of Rural Affairs in Scotland Ross Finnie and Agriculture Minister in the Welsh Assembly, Carwyn Jones.
