Two Citybus services suspended following attacks

Following a spate of recent attacks two Belfast Citybus services has been suspended in the hours of darkness.

The number 39 service to Carrs Glen and the number 57 service to north Belfast’s Ligoniel area has been suspended following a series of attacks on buses and drivers along the route. The latest attack along the notorious route involved a female bus driver who was robbed at knife-point on Tuesday night.

Translink noted that “due to community unrest” Citybus service 39 would only operate to Carrs Glen terminus via Ballysillian Road and not Silverstream, while Citybus service 57, Ligoniel, would be withdrawn from 5:30pm onwards until further notice.

Earlier in the week amid concern for the safety of drivers and passengers Translink appealed to community leaders to help stop the attacks, but said that they were left with no option but to suspend the service after the hours of darkness following a spate of attacks on buses in the area.

Translink said that recently there had been several cases involving assaults on drivers and over 80 attacks on buses, which had resulted in around 600 broken windows.

A Translink spokesperson warned that such a level of attacks and damage to the vehicles in service was commercially “unsustainable”. (SP)
