Computer virus hits government departments

Three Northern Ireland Government Departments have been hit by a computer virus.

The virus known as NIMDA E has closed down the computer systems in the Department of the Environment (DOE), the Department for Regional Development (DRD) and the Department for Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL).

It is estimated that around 5,000 computers in the affected departments will be off-line until next week while the system are purged and checked.

A Government spokesperson said: “While the service to the public will continue, there will be delays.”

Until the systems are back on-line the DOE are unable to issue vehicle registration books or process refunds. They will also be unable to issue dates and times of new appointments for driving tests. Also the property certificate service, also fully computerised will be unavailable.

Any customers who normally contact the DRD Roads Service by e-mail have been asked to telephone instead.

The DCAL website and electronic communications to and from staff are also affected and were down on Thursday. (CD)
