Aer Lingus' Passenger Numbers Fall
Aer Lingus - which flies from its Belfast International Airport hub in NI - has reported a decrease of almost 16% in passenger numbers compared to last month.
According to reports this morning, the number of people carried by the airline fell from 776,000 in November 2009 to 653,000 last month.
However, the fall is mainly being attributed to the carrier's adjustment in its type of flights, moving from high frequency, loss making short haul flights to more long haul journeys.
Today's figures showed that short haul passenger numbers fell 17.5% to 581,000, while long haul numbers were unchanged at 72,000, averaging out at 15.9% fall.
Aer Lingus reduced its long haul capacity significantly at the end of 2009 and made a smaller reduction to short haul capacity earlier this year.
At the time, Aer Lingus said the changes were made to achieve a better match between capacity and market demand in the core market of Ireland, and to remove loss-making routes.
Over the weekend, main competitor Ryanair said its November Traffic had grown by 2% to 5.06 million on last year with it's load factor remaining the same. The budget flier did not publish its figures compared to the previous month.
Meanwhile, Aer Lingus said its load factor increased by 1.3 points to 72.3% last month, with long haul load factor up 0.8 points (to 71.9%) and short haul load factor up 1.6 points (to 72.6%).
Short haul capacity fell by 20.6%.
