Job losses shock at The Irish Times
One of Ireland’s leading daily newspapers is set to lose 250 staff over the next nine months in a move that has ended speculation about the future of many of the firm’s employees.
Fears of extensive job losses at the Irish Times were confirmed on Tuesday 6 November, following a meeting between the newspaper’s management and union representatives.
While it is hoped that many of the redundancies will happen on a voluntary basis, the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed “shock” at the scale of the job losses and has raised the issue of a possible threat to the journalistic integrity of the publication due to reduced staffing levels.
Editor of The Irish Times, Conor Brady, is said to have hit back at initial criticisms over a possible new direction for the paper, by issuing an assurance of his commitment to independent coverage of serious issue.
It is thought the jobs are to go throughout all departments, and will affect employees at all levels within The Irish Times.
The redundancies will be phased in with staff cutbacks in four months - January, March, May and July next year. (CL)
