Irish IT sector reels from recent redundancies
The Irish IT sector has received a double blow in the form of two separate announcements of job losses in the industry.
On Monday, Swords-based electronic manufacturer Celestica Technologies announced that it was to shed 450 jobs from its County Dublin facility as a knock-on result of Motorola’s decision to cut back manufacture of its mobile phones. Celestica will cease production of components for Motorola by the end of the year, and the move forms part of an ongoing restructuring strategy by the company.
Then on Tuesday, computer services and consultancy firm Logica revealed that it is to reduce its workforce by around five per cent, a figure which could represents about 250 redundancies, spread throughout the company’s two plants located in Dublin and Cork.
A consultation process has already begun regarding the exact implementation of the job losses, and it is believed that at least 50 of them will take the form of compulsory redundancies. (CL)
