Major contract for Bombardier Aerospace

Belfast aerospace company Shorts is to take a major role in the design and construction of five new Bombardier 5000 business jets for TAG Aeronautics in the Middle East.

The deal was announced at the Dubai airshow in the on Monday, November 5.

However, the contract will not make any difference to the 1,100 jobs that are expected to go in the New Year unless the global economy stages a dramatic recovery.

Michael Ryan, Vice President and General Manager of Aerospace Operations in Northern Ireland, said: “Up to 50 engineers will be involved in the design phase, and when the programme is in full production in 2-3 years time, around 280 people will be working on it. This programme was taken into account when the redundancy situation was announced in late September. We have to go through this difficult period for our company and our employees, but it is important to understand that business does continue. We have to ensure our competitiveness and continue to deliver on commitments to our customers. Investments in new aircraft like the Bombardier Global 5000 are very important for our future.”

The Global 2000 jets will be able to fly eight passengers and three crew members non-stop from Dubai and other cities in the Middle East to every other major destination in Europe, including London and Paris, at a speed of 581mph. (CD)
