Local man appointed as INI Chief Executive

Northern Ireland born Leslie Morrison has been appointed as the Chief Executive of the new government inward investment agency, Invest Northern Ireland (INI).

INI is set to be launched in the New Year, and will see the integration of various government bodies into one economic development agency. When established, INI will have a Board of 10 –20 members, but in preparation for the launch, a Shadow Board - comprising seven members and a chairperson - has been appointed ahead of the due date.

As Chief Executive Designate, Mr Morrison will initially be employed by DETI and will transfer to INI and assume the title of Chief Executive when the agency is formally established.

Mr Morrison joins the agency at a crucial period in the province’s economic performance, with inward investment remaining stagnant in recent months. However, the Northern Ireland economy has demonstrated an ability to overcome adverse factors and has performed well in relation to other regions of the UK.

Commenting on the future prospects of INI, Alan McClure, President of the Derry Chamber of Commerce, warned: “The key to growth and regeneration is to ensure that our economy becomes more internationally competitive. The foundations are in place, but we must deliver on the key issues that will determine growth.

“Invest Northern Ireland must facilitate a greater emphasis amongst businesses in innovation, in training, in lifelong learning, and in marketing.” (CL)
