Thomas Cook to axe 2,600 jobs in Europe
Travel giant Thomas Cook is set to axe around 2,600 jobs across Europe.
However, it is as yet unknown if the cuts will involve any of its operations in Northern Ireland, the UK or Ireland.
The company revealed it was grounding some charter flights and closing 100 travel agencies, after reporting a 12 per cent fall in bookings.
Company business has taken a severe beating since the September 11 attacks on the United States with voluntary redundancy schemes and cuts in working hours having already been announced.
While the company revealed that the current UK package holiday market was "buoyant”, it said that bookings for this winter and next summer were quite poor.
Thomas Cook currently operates 700 high street travel shops across the UK. It also employs about 30,000 people across Europe. (MB)

UK travel operator Airtours has announced plans to axe 1,600 jobs despite recently reporting a 57 per cent rise in annual operating profits. The company have described the job losses as unavoidable, citing the tough trading conditions created in the wake of the September 11 terror attacks as adversely impacting on leisure travel industry.

Travel agency to create 120 jobs at old plant
Keith Prowse Travel, which specialises in the distribution and sale of tickets, is set to create 120 new jobs in Donegal over the next three years at its new customer centre. The British travel agency plans to start its initial recruiting stage next week for around 60 jobs at the centre in Buncrana, County Donegal.
