Harland and Wolff awarded Chinese design contract
Harland and Wolff have been awarded a contract from Nantong Cosco KHI Ship Engineering Company (known as NACKS) to develop a new design for a Suezmax oil tanker.
The design will be marketed by NACKS to shipowners worldwide and, following a build contract, Harland and Wolff Technical Technical Services will produce the detailed engineering for the entire vessel.
Welcoming the contract award, Don Wright, Managing Director of H&W Technical Services Ltd, said: “Technical Services is delighted to have been given this opportunity to work with such an innovative company as Nacks.
“The Technical Services Sales and Marketing team deserve credit for winning that rare prize, a design contract placed by a Chinese-Japanese joint venture shipyard with a British design company.
“It also marks a breakthrough into the significant potential of the Far East market where the significant current and planned investment in shipbuilding facilities offers a tremendous opportunity for Technical Services to provide our expertise.”
It is expected that the basic design should be completed by the end of March next year and detailed engineering will provide further substantial workload into 2003.
NACKS engages mainly in the shipbuilding work for various kinds of merchant vessels such as Bulk Carriers, Oil Tankers, Containerships, and Over Panamax Container Ships.
The contract, coupled with the recent additional orders placed with H&W by NASSCO, San Diego, will represent in the region of US$5m of new business which have secured in recent weeks. (MB)
