Sainsbury continues market turnaround
UK supermarket giant J Sainsbury has revealed further signs of a turnaround after the company revealed it had achieved a sales growth of six per cent between July and mid-October.
As well as trade from new stores, sales also grew by 7.6 per cent between July and mid-October. These latest figures represent the third quarter in a row of sales growth.
While these latest convalescing figures have been credited mainly to Chief Executive Sir Peter Davis, who was recently given the challenge of improving the company’s dwindling fortunes, City experts are keen to see whether he has managed to turn increased sales into profits, when it reveals next month’s half-year results.
The retailer in May revealed its second consecutive year of falling profits, while claiming a marked improvement in performance towards the end of the period. (MB)

Tesco fail to match Sainsbury over Christmas period
Figures from Tesco have revealed that its Christmas sales growth failed to match that of archrival J. Sainsbury. Excluding takings from petrol stations, Tesco reported a 6.2 per cent rise in UK Christmas sales for the seven weeks ending on January 5 - compared to that of Sainsbury’s who had a rise of 6.8 per cent.

Unilever announce first-half profit increase
Consumer goods giant Unilever have announced a 7 per cent rise in half-year pre-tax profits. For the second quarter, Unilever, the name behind some of the best-known products on supermarket shelves - such as Persil detergent, Flora margarine and Dove soap - reported a higher than expected 54 per cent hike in profits.

UK house prices set to beat growth expectations
UK mortgage lender Nationwide has said that house prices may beat growth expectations for the year ahead. Their expectations were made after their monthly property market review said that average house prices grew by 1.6 per cent in February compared to the previous month, and by 14 per cent on the year.

CBI survey reveals shop sales remain strong
Retail sales remained strong in March but the annual rate of increase has edged down from the peaks over Christmas and the New Year, according to the CBI's latest monthly distributive trades survey. The survey, released on Tuesday April 2, was conducted between 5 and 20 March 2002 with 268 retail outlets taking part.
