MTV Arrival Is 'Belfast's Moment'
Press, politicians and a specially invited group of students gathered in Belfast's Waterfront Hall on Wednesday morning as the council revealed that the MTV European Music Awards are to be held in Belfast.
Billed as one of the world's biggest music events ever to be staged in the city, the awards will be broadcast live from Belfast's Odyssey Arena in November this year and some of the biggest names in the music world are expected to arrive in the city to receive awards and possibly perform.
SDLP Lord Mayor of Belfast Cllr Pat Convery (pictured with MTV presenter Laura Whitmore) said: "This is Belfast's moment. It is fitting that the EMAs are coming to Belfast - one of Europe's most exciting and vibrant cities and with around 35% of our population below the age of 25.
"Belfast has a rich musical history and has produced artists such as Snow Patrol and the legendary Van Morrison and we now have an unprecedented opportunity to shine a spotlight on our musical heritage while also providing a major boost to our economy."
The show, which is broadcast to over 650 million homes around the world, is estimated to be worth over £10m to Belfast's economy.
Industry sources have revealed the events organisers, who have visited Belfast three times over the last 16 years to assess its eligibility, were treated to champagne receptions as part of the bid by the Council and Northern Ireland's Tourist Board.
It is also believed that the Belfast City Council sponsored appearance of Mark Ronson in the Waterfront towards the end of last year was a condition of Belfast's acceptance for the ceremony. It is believed the show cost the council over £70,000.
NI Tourism Minister Arlene Foster, who was also in attendance at the launch, welcomed MTV to Northern Ireland, saying: "Playing host city for the MTV EMAs is a huge coup, not only for Belfast, but for the whole of Northern Ireland.
"We are thrilled that Belfast will join the elite club of other leading European cities which have hosted these prestigious music awards.
"Hosting the MTV EMAs will surely elevate Northern Ireland's profile on the international stage. I hope those who come to Northern Ireland for this spectacular event are inspired to explore more of what we have to offer for themselves."
Past performers at the awards have included global stars U2, Coldplay, Green Day, Rihanna, Beyonce, Shakira, Jay-Z, Madonna, Prince, Bon Jovi, Take That and Foo Fighters.
Last year, the awards were granted to Madrid, and have previously visited Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris, Barcelona, London and in 1999, Dublin.
