BT Backs West Belfast Training
The NI Employment and Learning Minister, Danny Kennedy, has officially launched a joint engineering training initiative between BT and Springvale Learning in west Belfast.
Following BT's recent announcement of a £2.5bn investment in the rollout of 'superfast' broadband, Springvale Learning linked up with BT for the benefit of the unemployed.
The BT Telecommunications Engineering Training Initiative was developed using the Department for Employment and Learning's Steps to Work
The Minister said: "It is encouraging to see that even in this difficult economic climate Springvale has found a way to work in partnership with a high profile company like BT. Initiatives such as this provide opportunities for unemployed people to train for jobs in a fast growing high-tech sector.
"This is an excellent example of what can be done. I commend BT for its work in this area which demonstrates how companies can implement the corporate social responsibility agenda."
The Ulster Unionist Minister also paid tribute to the initiative displayed by Springvale Learning in working with BT and commented: "This is exactly the way we wish to see the Steps to Work programme operating, delivering jobs to meet the need of local employers and the unemployed."

Individual Learning Accounts have a successful year
The Minister for Employment, Dr Sean Farren, has hailed the success of the new Individual Learning Accounts (ILA’s). ILAs are a UK-wide initiative for people aged over 18. They cost nothing to get and provide direct financial support for people who want to further their education by offering discounts of up to £400 on certain courses.

BT comes under pressure from Oftel
British Telecom (BT) has come under pressure from telecommunications regulator Oftel to improve access to its lines for rival operators. Oftel has intervened to determine the service levels that BT must offer to other operators wanting to unbundle BT local loops and the compensation the company must pay if it fails to meet those levels.

New wave turnover sustains BT profits
A new wave of hi-tech turnover including broadband connections has helped BT to hold the line on profits. In its quarterly report published today, BT Group reported that turnover for the year was up 1%, at £9.2 billion. Most growth was in what BT described as "new wave" turnover that increased by 34% in the year to reach £1,969 million.
