Father Troy meets with Irish President and Taoiseach
The chairman of the Board of Governors of Holy Cross Primary School Father Aidan Troy has met with the Irish Taoiseach and Irish President in an effort to end the dispute surrounding the school.
Father Troy has been involved in efforts to try to end the dispute with Protestant residents since the blockade, now its eighth week, began.
At his request Fr Troy met Irish President Mary McAleese at her official residence, Áras an Uachtaráin in Dublin before meeting Taoiseach Bertie Ahern on Thursday afternoon.
The dispute surrounding the primary school in north Belfast began with residents from the Protestant Glenbryn area where the school is situated, protesting at the school because of alleged attacks by the larger Catholic community in Ardoyne.
The Catholic pupils have been escorted past the loyalist blockade by the security forces every day since the beginning of the school term. The placard and whistle protest has been relatively peaceful in recent weeks, but was violent at the beginning of September.
The Northern Ireland Office, local politicians and church leaders have all been involved in trying to resolve the dispute but have failed to find any resolution to the situation. (AMcE)
