Fitness First takes shape in Ballymena

Leading health club chain Fitness First is limbering up with the launch of a new outlet in Ballymena.

The opening of the state-of-the-art gymnasium at Pennybrook Retail Park forms part of a major UK wide expansion plan by Fitness First.

Fitness First, the third largest health club chain in the world, will be operating more than 100 clubs in the UK from this month. The new outlet in Ballymena will feature two gymnasia equipped with top of the range cardio-vascular and strength machines, an exercise studio, spa facilities including a steam room, sauna and sunbeds and an aromatherapy room.

Unique feature also include a juice and coffee bar offering complimentary refreshments and a members’ free video library stocking over 600 titles.

The 20,483 sq ft health club has also brought a boost of jobs in the region with dozens of opportunities having been made available to the local workforce during the construction and operation of the new outlet.

Mike Balfour, chief executive of Fitness First said: “The expansion plan - which takes place in Ballymena - that we are rolling out across the UK, is one of our most ambitious and this is a very exciting time for the company.

“Having established ourselves as one of the country’s market leaders in the field of health and fitness, we are now able to reinforce our position further and strengthen our key position in key towns and cities throughout the country.”

Fitness First currently operates clubs in 13 countries across continental Europe, Australia and Asia including the UK. The high quality and value for money health club chain aims to open more than 25 clubs in the UK and a further 40 clubs overseas during 2002. (MB)

LA Fitness unveils record jump in profits

The company, which has a fitness centre in Belfast's Ramada Hotel, revealed that pre-tax profits for the six months to 31 January climbed to £3m - 38 per cent up on the same period one year earlier.

Refurbished Fitness Suite Opens In Newtownabbey
