Construction Minister launches new careers site for industry
A new website that links construction students and construction employers has been officially launched by UK Construction Minister Brian Wilson.
The site, ‘designajob.co.uk’, is a pan-industry bid to help tackle the skills shortage and is a joint initiative by Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and GTI Online Solutions.
The site ensures that students taking construction-related courses are engaged with the industry at an early stage so that they are more likely to look for full-time employment within the industry. The student logs on to the site during their first year at university or later, which acts as a resource for them through their course and beyond.
The site works by registering students via an on-line application and then linking them up with a firm by browsing through company profiles and vacancy pages. Candidates can also join a ‘talent pool’ that companies, which are registered to use the site, can search at any time.
The site is free for students to use, but companies registering will be required to pay an annual fee. Designajob.co.uk has so far attracted support from 22 major companies from across the industry, which have agreed to work together to improve graduate recruitment and retention within the construction industry.
The careers scheme is also supported by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Institution of Civil Engineers. (MB)

RBS Closure Announcement Will Cost Jobs
According to Unite union nearly 500 jobs will be lost when the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) closes its site at Bristol. The closure,which will see 440 staff lose their jobs, comes as part of the cuts announced last year when the bank revealed that up to 3,000 jobs would be lost.

SDLP MLA and Chair of the All Party Group on Construction Patsy McGlone has responded to the announcement that the construction sector in Northern Ireland has 'exited' recession. Mr McGlone said: "The news that the construction industry in Northern Ireland is finally showing signs of recovery is to be welcomed.
