Northern Ireland IT users urged to upgrade systems
Banbridge IT firm, E R Media has warned Northern Ireland's IT users that they should maintain and upgrade their computer systems as a means of remaining cost effective.
E R Media’s managing director, Glenn Sands, made the call as his company signed trading agreements with Korean and Taiwan suppliers for the exclusive representation of their products throughout Ireland.
He said: "The very sophistication of our commercial communications network - from worldwide data transfer to e-commerce and e-mail - and our dependence upon it means that we are collectively and individually more vulnerable to harm than ever before in our commercial history.
“Protection against threat is in part outside our control but it behoves us to take care of the IT capability which is often a major part of an organisation's operational worth and its means of remaining competitive."
Mr Sands said that this did not mean investing in new or expensive computer equipment or software. He added: "The world is awash with computer systems which in many cases have been declared obsolete before their time because of industry's selling pressures in the recent past. Wise managements will concentrate on ensuring that existing systems are updated or upgraded - usually at a fraction of the cost of new equipment before embarking upon further expenditure.
"While the computer industry is in a state of disarray this is a time for consolidation, not of experiment. A sensible attitude towards DIY by corporate managements at such a time can pay handsome dividends."
Mr Sands, whose family-based company has grown to a £3.3 million turnover in just over two years, is launching a new trading company, IT-Partner, to satisfy a growing demand in both public and private sector for quality computer components and consumables.
IT-Partner will service this market, North and South, on a mail-order basis while at the same time continuing to roll-out its retail-sector trade which has driven the company to date.
