Other NI News In Brief

Terror Arrest

The detention of a 41-year old man - arrested on suspicion of terrorist activity - is not linked to the weekend bomb attack in Omagh in which Constable Ronan Kerr was killed. The suspect was detained in the Armagh area by detectives from the PSNI's Serious Crime Branch. The suspect has been taken to Antrim Serious Crime Suite where he is assisting detectives with their enquiries.

Blaze Tragedy

The Alliance East Antrim representative Cllr Stewart Dickson has expressed his sympathy following the death of an elderly woman in a house fire on Middle Road in Islandmagee on Saturday. Stewart Dickson said: "I was saddened to hear of this woman's death. My thoughts and sympathies are with her family at what must be a hard time for them. This death highlights the fatal dangers that house fires pose. I would encourage all people to make sure that they have working smoke alarms in their home," he said.

Son Arrested

A man is still being questioned about the murder of his mother and the attempted murder of his brother. The 52-year-old woman died and her son, 31, was injured, after they were stabbed in Connor, near Kells, Co Antrim, on Sunday. Her 33-year-old son was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

Teen Death Drive Charges

An 18-year-old man Conor Breen, from Corbo Road, Omagh, has been in court accused of causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink or drugs. He was also charged with causing grievous injury to two women, aged 48 and 23, and a three-year-old girl. The charges relate to a crash on Doogary Road, Omagh, on Saturday in which Simon Glenn, 26, died. Mr Breen was released on bail and will appear before Omagh Court on 17 May.

WWII Shell 'Alert'

A security alert in Antrim has now ended. The suspicious object found in the Six-mile River close to the Antrim Forum on Saturday is now thought to be a World War II mortar shell. It was found by a group of people who were cleaning debris from the river. The object has now been removed for forensic examination.

Drumming Up Votes

The former drummer for local legend punk band, Stiff Little Fingers (SLF), is to stand in next month's general election. The 52-year-old, who is also a DJ on a local radio station, announced he would be standing as a representative for the left wing People Before Profit party, on May 5. It's the first election in which the original drummer from Stiff Little Fingers is a candidate. Faloon was drummer on SLF's first album 'Inflammable Material', which featured their most famous recording, 'Alternative Ulster'. Mr Faloon is standing against alleged tax avoidance by retailers, Boots, Vodafone and Topshop and has signalled his grievance with the UK and America's involvement in the Libyan revolution, and attended last week's City Hall rally against the ongoing military interventions. Mr Faloon left the Stiff Little Fingers in 1979 and was replaced by Jim Reilly.
