Northern Ireland exporters set for Gulf States

A 17-strong delegation of Northern Ireland companies are set to visit the Arabian Gulf States in an export mission organised by Trade International, the IDB’s export and trade arm.

The mission, which will take place between October 12-22 is being led by Bill McGinnis, a former President of the Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and a prominent Northern Ireland businessman with links to the Gulf region stretching over 30 years.

Commenting on the mission, which will take in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, Mr McGinnis said: "This strong delegation of Northern Ireland exporters demonstrates the determination of our companies to continue to pursue business even in markets close to the region of the current international tension.

"The companies are going because the Gulf is now firmly established as one of Northern Ireland's top ten markets. Trade missions to this market are now extremely popular because of the interest shown in Northern Ireland companies by business leaders in the Emirates and other parts of the Gulf.

"In addition to participation in regular trade missions to the region, Northern Ireland companies now take part in major international exhibitions in Dubai including Index, and The Hotel Show.”

The group will include a broad cross-section of Northern Ireland business and many of the participating companies have already established trade with the Gulf region, particularly with the Emirates.

Among the delegation member’s visiting the Emirates for the first time is a senior representative of the Research and Regional Services office at Queen's University, Belfast. The university is evaluating the business potential of setting up a base at Dubai Internet City.

Trade International is also considering Dubai Internet City as a base from which to further develop business contacts throughout the region.

Trade International organises missions to the Gulf States usually on a twice-yearly basis and co-ordinates participation in exhibitions and trade shows. (MB)
