Other NI News In Brief
Cash Kidnap Probed
A man has been 'kidnapped' and forced to hand over cash. It happened as he was driving along the Monkshill Road, in Newry, at 3am on Monday, when he saw a car with hazard lights on and stopped to help. A man armed with a gun threatened him and ordered him to return to his workplace in Sandys Street. The kidnapper forced the victim to hand over money and then locked him in the boot of his car, which was abandoned on Greenan Road outside the city.
Toome 'Hoax'
The PSNI said last night that an object found attached to a van on Monday night was a hoax after it was discovered while the van was parked outside a shop in Toome. Local Sinn Fein councillor Peter Bateson, who said the object looked like a pipe bomb, intervened to drive the vehicle to waste ground after an area near the Elk bar and the Creagh Road was closed for a time while Army bomb experts examined the object. A Belfast security alert at Limestone Road on Monday night is now also over. It was the second alert in north Belfast yesterday with "nothing untoward found" in the earlier Tennent Street incident.
Lurgan Troubled
Street violence flared in Co Armagh last night as police were attacked during searches after two hoax bomb alerts in Lurgan. Petrol bombs were thrown at police as they carried out searches in the Victoria Street area. A vehicle was hijacked in the Bells Row district and the police said a firearm was also seen during the incident. Earlier in the day the Tullygally Road in Craigavon was closed after reports of a suspicious object. The second alert in Lurgan began after a warning that a bomb had been left on waste ground.
Claims Limit Up
The Small Claims limit in NI is increasing from £2,000 to a new limit of £3,000. A small claim provides a simple and informal way to resolve certain legal disputes with the rise in the limit being a significant change to a straightforward process allowing more claims to be processed and opening up justice to the citizen at a time of economic constraint. The Small Claims Court offers a means of settling disputes in the County Court about issues surrounding unpaid debt, rent arrears, hire purchase payments, faulty goods, unsatisfactory workmanship and damage to property. See www.courtsni.gov.uk and where a small claim is not contested, the entire process can be conducted over the Internet without ever involving a court appearance.
