Province to benefit from £366m in EU peace money

The Finance Minister Mark Durkan has announced hundreds of millions of pounds worth of European funding will soon be pumped into thousands of projects across Northern Ireland.

Speaking at a special event in Belfast on Thursday October 11 to mark a key stage in the implementation of the EU funding programme known as Peace II, the Minister announced that some £366 million would be made available to groups working for peace across the province.

He also confirmed that an additional £5 million has been made available for voluntary and community groups which are already in receipt of Gap Funding.

Mr Durkan said: “This announcement should be welcomed by everyone in Northern Ireland and the border region. It brings certainty, in a period of political uncertainty, to the thousands of groups working to deliver a peaceful society for all.”

The Peace II funding programme, which is aimed at addressing the legacy of the Northern Ireland conflict and taking opportunities arising from peace, will target a wide range of activities including: support for victims and survivors of violence, promoting reconciliation for a sustainable peace, and promoting cross border economic development, reconciliation and understanding among others.

The Minister said: “Peace II is an unique European Programme. Unique in its objectives, which are to address the legacy of our prolonged conflict and to help us move towards a peaceful and stable society and promote reconciliation.

“The Executive and the European Commission want to see Peace II make a positive and lasting contribution to the future of this region. It is not simply a re-run of Peace I, but offers new opportunities to address the needs and opportunities we are facing today.”

Turning to his announcement last week that the existing Gap Funding arrangements would be extended the Minister revealed that this meant a further £5 million would be allocated to 700 groups.

He explained: “This money will ensure that those projects currently receiving Gap Funding from Departments or the Special EU Programmes Body will be able to continue the vital work they are doing as they prepare and submit applications for PEACE II funding.” (AMcE)
