MTV Awards 'Could Force Licensing Change'
The arrival of the European Music Awards may prompt a change to Northern Ireland's strict licensing laws.
The awards show, launched in Belfast by MTV's Laura Witmore, (pictured) and due to take place this November, is scheduled for a Sunday night.
However, celebrations could be cut short due to the current time limit on the sale of alcohol of 12am - an issue that was raised during a discussion on extending Sunday trading laws during a full meeting at City Hall this week.
Sinn Fein's Alex Maskey, who was arguing for a relaxation of the current restrictions said that during post award show parties venues could "have Madonna lined up to do a DJ set and not be able to go ahead with it because it has to close at midnight".
Under current legislation some nightclubs have an entertainments licence permitting music to be played until 3am although all no alcohol can be sold after midnight.
"Belfast needs to get with the 21st century and stop being behind the times," Mr Maskey added.
In March, it was announced that the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards would be held in Belfast. The international event, which is expected to be watched by hundreds of millions of pop fans around the world, will take place at the city's Odyssey Arena on Sunday 6 November.
It had been estimated that the awards could raise some £10 million in tourism.
