SDLP Unveil Election Campaign And Candidates

The SDLP have launched their election campaign and unveiled their Assembly candidates at the Hilton hotel, Belfast.

Leader and South Down MP Margaret Ritchie (pictured) cited uniting people and building prosperity as the party's priorities.

Speaking at the official campaign launch, Ms Ritchie said SDLP ideals and instinct for government and partnership will deliver for the people.

"The SDLP want to see a Northern Ireland that is attractive to business: which takes care of the sick and respects its older citizens; and which is a great place to work and to raise a family."

Ms Ritchie went on to say that the creation of jobs in the sectors which offer the greatest growth potential, investment in the education and training of young people and radically reforming the public sector were all part of the manifesto.

She commented: "We are brimming over with ideas in all of these areas and we intend to debate them in depth and with great confidence in this campaign. It is an exciting prospect – to debate real bread and butter issues – in an election campaign for our own government. Therefore, the central question of this campaign is, who has the ideas and who is best placed to deliver, on uniting people and building prosperity."

The 28 Assembly candidates, who are running in all 18 constituencies, are fielding 147 local council candidates, of whom 46 are women and 64 are new faces.

Included are members from Poland, Lithuania & Portugal.

The event, originally due to take place on Monday, was postponed as a mark of respect to PC Ronan Kerr who was brutally murdered in Omagh at the weekend.

In her speech Ms Ritchie paid tribute to Constable Kerr.

"Very recent events have shown us in the most poignant way how important it is for us to work together to make Northern Ireland the better place it can become," she stated.
