Two Arrests Over Castlerock Gas Tragedy

Two men have been arrested and are being questioned by detectives about the deaths of two teenagers from carbon monoxide poisoning.

The victims, Aaron Davidson and Neil McFerran, both aged 18 and from Newtownabbey, died tragically at a holiday apartment in Castlerock (shown on map) last August.

Detectives in Coleraine carried out the arrests and have detained the men - aged 40 and 49 years – for questioning about the deaths.

The two friends had been staying at the apartment near Coleraine with a third friend, Matthew Gaw, who survived the gas leak.

They were found by relatives worried about them not being in contact.

The Health and Safety Executive investigation into the deaths established that a Liquefied Petroleum Gas appliance in the flat was defective and reiterated its general guidelines with regards to gas safety.

Following the deaths, the NI Social Development Minister, then Alex Attwood, announced carbon monoxide detectors would be fitted in almost 3,000 NI Housing Executive homes across Northern Ireland.

The mothers of the dead teenagers also made a film with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents NI to raise awareness of the 'silent killer' and how future tragedies can be prevented.
