Two Arrests Over Castlerock Gas Tragedy

Two men have been arrested and are being questioned by detectives about the deaths of two teenagers from carbon monoxide poisoning.

The victims, Aaron Davidson and Neil McFerran, both aged 18 and from Newtownabbey, died tragically at a holiday apartment in Castlerock (shown on map) last August.

Detectives in Coleraine carried out the arrests and have detained the men - aged 40 and 49 years – for questioning about the deaths.

The two friends had been staying at the apartment near Coleraine with a third friend, Matthew Gaw, who survived the gas leak.

They were found by relatives worried about them not being in contact.

The Health and Safety Executive investigation into the deaths established that a Liquefied Petroleum Gas appliance in the flat was defective and reiterated its general guidelines with regards to gas safety.

Following the deaths, the NI Social Development Minister, then Alex Attwood, announced carbon monoxide detectors would be fitted in almost 3,000 NI Housing Executive homes across Northern Ireland.

The mothers of the dead teenagers also made a film with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents NI to raise awareness of the 'silent killer' and how future tragedies can be prevented.

Gas Storage To Be Built Under Lough
A £440m gas storage facility is to be built a mile underneath Larne Lough. The development will enable 500m cubic metres of natural gas to be stored in caverns underneath the lough. The new bank will be able to hold enough gas to provide energy for Northern Ireland for sixty days.

Poots Tackles NI's Greenhouse Gases
There's to be a new group to tackle greenhouse gas emissions for Northern Ireland. The Stormont Environment Minister Edwin Poots revealed that he is to chair the organisation and also issued a positive response to the NI Environment Committee's recent 'Inquiry into Climate Change Report'.

Gas customers escape price hike
Gas customers in Northern Ireland are to be spared from a major hike in prices due to a new deal between Phoenix Gas and Ofreg. Phoenix Gas today confirmed that an agreement has been reached in principle with Ofreg to extend the recovery of the network investment from the current date of 2016 to 2046.
