Politicians meet Secretary of State over Shorts job losses

Three Unionist politicians have met Secretary of State Dr John Reid to try to secure government help for workers at Shorts in Belfast.

Peter Robinson and Sammy Wilson of the Democratic Unionist Party and the Progressive Unionist Party's David Ervine arranged the meeting after 2,000 employees jobs were put under threat following the terrorist attacks in America on September 11 which have caused severe financial problems for the airline industry throughout the world.

Shorts, which is owned by the Canadian company Bombardier Aerospace, has said it will lay off 900 people between now and the end of January 2002. It has also warned that a further 1,100 jobs from the 6,500 workforce will go early next year unless there is an upturn in market conditions.

Mr Robinson, who is also the MP for the area, said the Secretary of State had been in touch with both the DETI and the Treasury into looking “at the kind of issues that would assist those companies who have placed orders with Bombardier but who are having difficulties”.

The predicted job cuts are potentially the biggest single loss of jobs in Northern Ireland in decades. (MB)
