Security Alert At Home Of Londonderry SDLP Councillor Declared A Hoax

A security alert in Londonderry has been declared an "elaborate hoax" by police.

Police were called to investigate when a suspicious package was left in the garden of SDLP councillor Jim Clifford, in the Creggan area of the city.

The device was discovered by a passer-by and homes in the area were evacuated.

The Iniscarn Road was closed at Linsfort Drive and Rathlin Drive.

Mr Clifford said the incident was not just an attack on his home but the entire community.

He commented: "Neighbours, friends and family have had to be evacuated and during the school rush parents and children have been frightened and severely inconvenienced. Elderly neighbours have been brought from their beds. This is an attack on democracy and those responsible have no interest in the will of the people. This is an attack on the entire community. This will not deter me or my party from representing the people of the area and further afield. Indeed, it has made our resolve stronger."
