Food industry is at a crossroads

A group tasked with making a report on Northern Ireland’s agricultural sector has presented their findings to Agricultural Minister Bríd Rodgers.

Mrs Rodgers said: “In many ways, the agri-food industry is at a crossroads and there are many difficult decisions that need to be taken. Failure to address the challenges that lie ahead will consign the industry to stagnation and decline. Therefore, we must be prepared to seize the initiative and attempt to shape our own destiny.”

The ‘Vision for the Future of the Agri-food Industry’ report, published on Thursday 4 October, represents the output of over a year’s intensive work on the part of the Group and identifies the challenges facing the industry and potential solutions to ensure prosperity in the sector.

Compiled by the Vision Steering Group, which was set up by the minister last year the report sought to evaluate the agricultural sector and the problems facing it, particularly in the aftermath of foot-and-mouth disease.

Trade Minister Sir Reg Empey has welcomed the publication of the latest agri-food report.

He said: “This report has highlighted the need for Government and the agri-food industry to work together to face the challenges of a global marketplace.

“It is essential that we take this approach to ensure that the structure and performance of the food industry realises its maximum potential,” he added. (AMcE)
