RTÉ Commissions New Fanfare for Queen's Visit
The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra will be one of a number of artists performing at the special ceremony celebrating the visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Ireland on Thursday 19 May.
The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh (pictured here by Brian McCalden) will join President McAleese and 2,000 guests drawn from Irish sport, culture, politics, entertainment, business and charities at the event, to be held at the Convention Centre in the Dublin Docklands.
To mark this historic event, the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra has commissioned a new Fanfare from Irishman Brian Byrne to open the main event programme.
The main event will also involve second level students from Methodist College, Belfast and Presentation Secondary School, Ballyphehane, Cork, successive winners of the 2009 and 2010 All-Island School Choir Competition organised by RTÉ and Co-operation Ireland in association with the Reconciliation fund of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Titanic Quarter. David Brophy will conduct the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra.
Séamus Crimmins, Executive Director, RTÉ Performing Groups said: "The RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra is delighted to participate so centrally in this historic occasion.
"As the orchestra comes to the end of a season noted for its innovation and change, and looks forward to its summer lunchtime and evening concert season, it is a new and welcome departure for us to work with artists such as Westlife, X Factor star Mary Byrne and recording artist and former Eurovision winner Eimear Quinn.
"It is a particular pleasure for us to involve the students from Belfast and Cork, successive winners of the All-Island School Competition organised by RTÉ and Co-Operation Ireland in the last two years."

Work Begins On New £9m Moira School Development
Education Minister Paul Givan has welcomed the start of construction of the new £9 million Rowandale Integrated Primary School in Moira. The investment from the Fresh Start Programme will provide a new, modern primary school with 14 classrooms and nursery unit accommodating over 340 pupils.

Unions have announced that the latest strike action has been cancelled to allow ministers to time to prepare improved pay offers.
