Art for all scheme launched in north Belfast

An innovative scheme designed to increase accessibility to the arts in north Belfast has been welcomed by Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure Minister Michael McGimpsey.

The Northern Arts Pilot Project is a six-month-long multi-arts initiative which will involve over 400 participants in ten centres in north Belfast.

Part-funded by the Arts Council Lottery Department and Belfast City Council, the scheme with the assistance of local professional artists will offer a wide range of activities including painting, drama, dance, photography and music.

The area of north Belfast has been the scene of bitter sectarian clashes since the summer and has recently attracted worldwide attention following loyalist protests outside a Catholic primary school in Ardoyne.

Launching the Northern Arts Pilot Project at Belfast Castle, the Mr McGimpsey said: “I firmly believe that the vast majority of people have a creative streak within them and, regardless of educational qualifications, social background or physical disadvantage, everyone should be given the opportunity to uncover that hidden talent and realise their potential.

“The arts can be a real force for regenerating urban areas and stimulating local economies as well as increasing self-confidence and fostering a sense of civic pride. Increasing public access to the arts, in all their forms, is therefore very important and that is one of the goals my Department has set itself in its Corporate Strategy.”

Mr McGimpsey said that this initiative by the Arts for All organisation would enable people in the north of the City to explore their creativity, many for the first time. He added: “I would encourage as many as possible to grasp this opportunity and, as well as enjoying the experience, make a positive contribution to the community.” (AMcE)
