Community relations strategy emphasises collective responsibility

The issue of collective responsibility has been placed high on the agenda following the launch of the Community Relations Council's Strategic Plan for 2001-2004.

The Strategic Plan represents Community Relation’s Council’s (CRC) vision for the way ahead and will feed in to the Government's own independent review of its community relations strategy.

CRC’s Strategic Plan builds on its work over the past 11 years, and is the result of its work with statutory and voluntary bodies and communities to address community relations needs and concerns.

Speaking at the launch of the Strategy in Parliament Buildings, Dermot Nesbitt, Minister in the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister, said: "Working to improve community relations is not an option, but is something which should be incorporated in all our activities, whether business or social, work or play.

“It is the responsibility of us all, to do whatever we can, to ensure that the whole community enjoys an environment free from conflict; we must all work to cement peace and reconciliation.”

The Community Relations Council was established in 1990 with Government support as a limited independent company with charitable status. It aims to assist in the creation of just and sustainable solutions to the many issues that divide the communities in Northern Ireland. (CL)
