Chancellor promises an end to terrorist financing
Chancellor Gordon Brown has announced new plans to guard against the financing of terrorism, both on a national and international level.
As part of a package of decision measures, police on the UK mainland are to be given greater power to investigate suspicious bank accounts even in the absence of a direct link to an individual or group involved with terrorism. The move will see mainland police on a par with security forces in Northern Ireland on the issue, as the latter can already track such financial activities.
Pressure is also to be stepped up in the European Union for further action on laws governing the crime of money laundering, which are currently under consideration by the European Parliament.
UK financial institutions have liaised with American counterparts in the wake of last Tuesday’s terrorist attacks on the US, by issuing them with an updated list of terrorist suspects. Barclays Bank have already agreed to freeze an account used by an individual linked to Osama Bin Laden who is awaiting extradition from the UK to the US.
On an international level, financial institutions have responded actively to the attacks, as central banks worldwide have implemented a cut in interest rates to try to improve confidence and avert global economic collapse. (CL)
