Empey warns against fears of oil shortage
Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Sir Reg Empey has responded to speculation that oil is in short supply in Northern Ireland by issuing an assurance that such fears are groundless.
Speaking on Tuesday 18 September, the Minister said: "I have been assured by Northern Ireland's major oil importers that there is currently no shortage and that supplies, sufficient to meet regular demands, continue to be received.
"However, it has been reported to me that some individual households are experiencing problems in getting refills from their usual suppliers. The problems tend to be in localised areas where, I suspect, there may have been panic buying.
"Added to that, last week's price rises have led to anger amongst consumers and reports of suppliers refusing to quote a price in advance of an order, have escalated people's fears.
"I have therefore asked my officials, in conjunction with the General Consumer Council for Northern Ireland, to keep me informed on any reports of problems with delivery and price being experienced by consumers across Northern Ireland.”
Sir Reg went on to state that both customers and suppliers should be aware that when ordering heating oil via the telephone, fax, digital TV or the Internet, the customer is legally entitled, before placing an order, to be told the price of the oil, including tax, and how long that price will remain valid.
"If customers find that they are experiencing any difficulties, they should contact the Trading Standards Service on 028 9025 3900," he added. (CL)
