Sangart Plans Irish Manufacturing Facility

A global biopharmaceutical company is to build a new facility at Carrigtwohill, Cork.

The move will involve significant job creation including 125 during construction, and up to 120 manufacturing jobs after completion.

The company, Sangart Inc., is dedicated to developing life-saving medicines specifically designed to enhance the perfusion and oxygenation of ischemic (oxygen deprived) tissues through targeted oxygen and other gas delivery.

The new manufacturing facility in Ireland will serve as Sangart’s European headquarters and sales and manufacturing base in Europe for its investigational therapies, MP4OX and MP4CO.

Brian O’Callaghan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sangart said: “The need for oxygen therapeutic agents such as MP4OX and MP4CO is a global one, and our manufacturing investment in Ireland is an important element of preparing for the potential future marketing of our therapies.

“Expanding our global presence is a critical part of our commitment to getting Sangart’s therapies in the hands of physicians to benefit patients as quickly as possible.”

MP4OX, the company’s lead product, is a novel oxygen therapeutic agent designed to provide rapid oxygen delivery to ischemic tissues. MP4CO is designed to deliver therapeutic levels of carbon monoxide to patients suffering from a sickle cell crisis.

Welcoming the announcement, Richard Bruton TD, Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, said: “Today’s announcement shows that our policies are working.

“Sangart was one of the companies I met on my recent investment mission to the USA, and the announcement that they are locating a facility in Ireland with the creation of 120 jobs, along with an additional 125 construction jobs, is very welcome. However, if we are to get out of the crisis we are in, we must redouble our efforts. I am determined to bring about ambitious policy change so that we can keep replicating the announcement and get jobs and the economy growing again.”

The investment in the Irish facility is supported by the Irish Government with the aid of IDA Ireland.
