Transatlantic flights resume from Ireland

Transatlantic flights to and from Belfast have resumed as regulations covering low-level flights over central London are lifted.

The ban over such flights was put in place following last Tuesday’s terrorist attacks in America. All flights from Belfast – and Dublin – using Heathrow and London’s City airport can now proceed, while flights arriving from the US are free to land again at airports throughout Ireland.

The UK’s Civil Aviation Authority confirmed the lifting of the restrictions early on Sunday morning. However, passengers are being warned not to expect flights to run on time, as increased security measures may see delays of up to three hours at some locations. The list of items that passengers are banned from taking with them as hand luggage has also been extended to include cutlery, knives, razors, cricket bats, golf clubs and toy guns.

Airlines are also attempting to give precedence to individuals wishing to return to the US in order to find out more about relatives involved in the terrorist attacks. (CL)
