UK retail sales continue to grow
There is no sign of a slowdown on the high street as August’s retail sales figures reveal that sales are growing at their highest rate since May.
Compared to the same period last year sales are buoyant, up 6.3 per cent, but on the July figures sales grew by 0.5 per cent, down 0.2 per cent on the July increase which was 0.7 per cent.
City markets responded well to the news from the Office of National Statistics that high street sales in August remained healthy. Though concern is growing that the manufacturing sector is continuing to experience problems, the consumer sector and the service sector appear to be holding the UK economy from slipping into a recession.
However, many analysts remain anxious that with all three of the world’s major economic zones on the brink of recession the attack on the US may serve to dent consumer confidence.
Strong consumer spending is viewed as the main factor preventing a slump across the markets and there is increasing speculation that this may have to be stimulated further by a cut in interest rates. (SP)
