Senior DVA Official Suspended In Inquiry
The Department of the Environment (DOE) has suspended a senior official from his post pending the completion of disciplinary proceedings.
While it has not been confirmed, BBC NI has today reported that the man at the centre of the controversy is a very senior staff member at the Driving and Vehicle Agency, (DVA).
They said that the top civil servant - whom they named - has been suspended from his post pending the outcome of disciplinary proceedings.
However, without confirming the man's identity, the DOE is at pains to say that this action has been taken to facilitate disciplinary proceedings and that it does not presume any specific outcome to the process.
Commenting on the action taken by the Department, Environment Minister Alex Attwood, (pictured) said: "I have been briefed by my Permanent Secretary about the matters that have led to these disciplinary proceedings.
"I believe the action announced by the Department today is appropriate and proportionate and will facilitate early conclusions to be reached and decisions to be made," said the SDLP MLA.
"When these proceedings have been completed I will ensure that the outcome and details of the background to the issues are provided, where appropriate, to the Environment Committee and to the Assembly.
"In the meantime it is important that no inferences are drawn about any individual pending the completion of the Department's disciplinary proceedings."
