CBI Director-General criticises DTI

Confederation of British Industry (CBI) Director-General, Digby Jones has criticised the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for failing to give British Industry the backing it needs from Government.

Mr Jones, speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, said that the DTI was not giving this backing partly because it was not tough enough in standing up to other ministries.

He also revealed that he had written, in reply to a request from the DTI, to give his views to the department and its head Patricia Hewitt.

In his interview, Mr Jones added: "We feel that this is the one department that has the opportunity to really push the wealth creation message in government...and frankly we do need much more championing of the business message within government and not so much of the hand of regulation.”

He also criticised previous DTI campaigns, in particular the 'Rip-off Britain' campaign against over-pricing by companies launched under Mrs Hewitt's predecessor, Stephen Byers. (MB)
