City Council seek response to Belfast Metropolitan Area Plan
Belfast City Council is to adopt a proactive approach to consultation on the Belfast Metropolitan Area Plan (BMAP).
Chairman of the Belfast City Council Development Committee Chrissie McAuley recently outlined the Council’s approach to BMAP. She said that it as important for the Council to be at the forefront of the development of the plan, as it would represent a “milestone in the history of planning for Belfast”.
The plan will form the basis of a statutory document on which planning decisions for the city will be derived.
Consultation will shape the specific needs and address the issues for the city in relation to the use of land and property development in the metropolitan area.
The area included in the plan takes in not only the city, but also adjoining areas in Carrickfergus, Newtownabbey, Lisburn, Castlereagh and North Down.
The consultation paper is expected to be published by the Department of The Environment in November this year and final responses will be sought before January 2002.
In order to meet the tight timescale Belfast City Council is due to complete its consultation exercise by the end of September. (SP)

The British Enterprise Academy (BEA) is urging students who would like to set up businesses while they are studying to take part in its pre-enterprise support programme.
