County Antrim to benefit from £3m textile technology boost
The Baird Group is to invest £3 million in its Kells subsidiary in a move which will see the creation up to 24 jobs and result in one of the most advanced linen-based dyeing and finishing plant in the world.
The Group’s strategic investment in the John Hanna plant will utilise expertise and support from Queen’s University and IRTU to further the development of textile-related technologies, including the production of linen and innovative linen-mix fabrics for both existing and potentially substantial new markets that Baird Group has identified.
Baird Group Joint Managing Director James Baird described the investment as leading to increased competitiveness for the company in “the vitally important areas of product quality, creativity, delivery, responsiveness to customers and, of course, price”.
He added: “In addition to consistently high quality finishing across a broader range of linen fabrics that we will be able to provide, the greater flexibility from having complete control over these essential functions will strengthen our market position by enabling us to further enhance our services to customers.
“They will benefit, for example, from our ability to undertake shorter production runs and to meet increasingly tight deadlines. This enables our customers to respond faster to market trends with consistently high quality fabrics.”
The investment will also create an expected 24 new jobs, mostly at management or technician level.
The company currently employs 61 people at its Kells facility. (CL)
