Campaign seeks health care equality in Tyrone

At the launch of the “Hospital Campaign for the Rural West” Joe Byrne the SDLP assembly member for West Tyrone has called for equality of health care for the region.

Mr Byrne said that the recommendation of the Hayes report to locate the new hospital near Enniskillen will leave the people of Tyrone with a third rate health service.

“The Hayes proposals are totally unacceptable to the people of Tyrone,” said Mr Byrne. “If these proposals are implemented by the Health Minister, Tyrone will be the only country in the North without any acute facilities. The recommendation to replace the Tyrone County with a local health and social care resource centre will leave the people of Tyrone with a third rate health service.”

However, he welcomed the appointment of a team of health economics experts who are to carry out an analysis of the Hayes report.

Mr Byrne said a new acute hospital based in Enniskillen would serve a population of only 90,000, leaving Tyrone a county with a population approaching 170,000 without an acute health service.

Launching the campaign Mr Byrne said that if the proposals were implemented County Tyrone would be left with a health service that was no better than that provided 50 years ago. (SP)
