Tragic Road Accidents Blight Irish Roads

A woman has been knocked down and killed in a road traffic accident in Ballymoney.

The police have confirmed that the victim was a female pedestrian, aged 56, and that she died after being struck by a vehicle on the Lislagan Road on Wednesday evening.

The PSNI are now appealing for anyone who was travelling in the area between 8pm and 8.15pm to come forward with any information about the collision.

They have asked that witnesses contact them in Ballymoney on 0845 600 8000.

This means that a total of 46 people have died so far this year on Northern Ireland's roads.

There was also another Irish road tragedy yesterday with the Gardaí in Belmullet investigating a single vehicle fatal road traffic collision that occurred near the Co Mayo village.

Officers said the collision occurred at approx 11.50am on the 19th Oct 2011 on the Belmullet to Blacksod road at Binghamstown.

They said the driver, aged 59, was the sole occupant of the car that collided with a wall.

He was taken to Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar where he was pronounced dead. No one else was injured in the collision.
