Zoo Goes All Scary
Visitors are being urged to come along for a spook-tacular day of fun at Belfast Zoo's 'Boo at the zoo' Halloween event on Saturday 29 October. It promises eerie activities, including a 'Hallzooween' trail, creepy crafts, reptile displays and animal feeding times. There will also be spooky story telling with Mr Hullabaloo and you can learn more about bats with the Northern Ireland Bat Group. To boost number, children (under 18) will get free entry to the zoo, on Saturday 29 October, if they are in fancy dress, and they can also enter our fancy dress competition (under 16s must be accompanied by an adult) and can also bring along your carved pumpkins and enter them into the 'pumpkin patch competition'.

Soccer Women Boosted

The Irish Football Association (IFA) Community Relations Department is running a women in sport conference - called Kicking Forward. This event will bring together the spectrum of those involved in women's sport in Northern Ireland including coaches, players, and fans for a day of discussion on the current state of women in sport and the opportunities that exist beyond simply playing. Analyzed through the lens of football, conference topics aim to cover leadership roles, barriers to inclusion, cultural integration, and empowerment. It takes place on Saturday 5th November at Belfast's Stormont Hotel.

All-Island Forensic Call

The SDLP Policing Spokesperson Conall McDevitt is calling on the Stormont Assembly for an all-island Forensic Science Service to tackle what he claimed are 'huge delays' in the organisation. The South Belfast MLA said: "It is facing huge pressures due to budget cuts, a massive backlog in their operations and therefore serious delays in service delivery. Given these very significant problems at regional level it makes sense to develop a shared service with the Republic to meet the needs of the entire island," he said. "Not only will this offer better value for money for people North and South, but is could significantly reduce delays in our criminal justice system and could play a significant role in rebuilding our forensic science service here. The current service is at crisis point and if urgent steps are not taken, this could have a very serious impact on the PSNI's ability to carry out investigations and bring criminals to justice."

Down Start-up Facility Welcomed

A new initiative by Down Business Centre to help reduce unemployment has been welcomed by the Newcastle Alliance Councillor Patrick Clarke. "Down Business Centre is an important economic hub to Down District and provides much needed support and assistance to people who are considering becoming self employed and moving a business idea to a new level," he said. "It is running a free programme 'Exploring Enterprise 2' to help people unemployed and out of work to get back into employment or consider looking at ways of becoming self-employed through taking a business idea to the next stage. As a Board member of Down Business Centre I am well aware of the present economic climate we are currently experiencing across Northern Ireland and the high level of unemployment that is presently facing many people in Down District," he said.
