Medical Manufacturer To Create 79 Jobs

A medical devices company in Ireland has announced a significant investment and in turn will create 79 jobs for Leitrim.

The Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Mr Richard Bruton announced that VistaMed is to invest €7.2m in research, development and the expansion of its production capacity, creating 79 new jobs – almost doubling its current workforce.

The investment, which is being supported by the government through Enterprise Ireland, will see VistaMed expand its research and development activities to ensure continued growth in export sales and Irish employment.

Meanwhile it will also later involve an expansion of their manufacturing facilities in Carrick on Shannon.

Minister Bruton said the expanision is a "great boost" for Carrick on Shannon and added "Vistamed is an Irish company taking advantage of Ireland’s excellent record in the multinational medical technology sector."

Managing Director of VistaMed Paddy Mulholland said: "This investment will allow us to add additional sophisticated equipment and expand our talented technical resources which will enable us to continue to offer a world class service."

Established in 1998, VistaMed offers design, development and manufacturing of complex Catheters and complimentary medical devices. Supported by a state of the art extrusion process the company manufactures complex medical tubing out of two manufacturing plants in Carrick on Shannon, Co Leitrim and Rooskey, Co. Leitrim.

The company employs 93 people in Leitrim and exports to the UK, Europe, America, South America and India.

600 Manufacturing Jobs Under Threat
The threat to 600 manufacturing jobs at OneSubsea, the Leeds oil and gas engineering firm, reinforces the need for a strong industrial strategy to protect such skilled jobs, Unite the union. Unite said the news that the Houston-based multinational wanted to shed 600 of its 900-strong workforce by the end of 2017 had come "out of the blue".

Contech Medical expansion to create 80 new jobs
A leading medical device manufacturing and packaging company has announced it is to create 80 new jobs in Galway. Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mary Harney said the decision by Contech Medical Ltd to expand in the area was "an acknowledgement of the Galway facility" by the parent company.
