Maskey Welcomes West Belfast Drug Hauls
Ecstasy worth an estimated £100k has been seized during what has been described as a planned PSNI operation in Belfast.
A police spokesperson said that two men were arrested after a car was stopped on Stockman's Lane on Sunday. The pair, aged 43 and 24, are now helping police with their inquiries.
The Sinn Fein MP for West Belfast Paul Maskey has welcomed the recent drug seizures commenting that over £100,000 worth of ecstasy tablets were discovered when the car was stopped in Stockman's Lane.
He also said that, earlier in the week over £230,000 of cocaine and ecstasy tablets were recovered following a car being stopped on the Grosvenor Road.
Speaking today Mr Maskey said: "The recent drug seizure by the PSNI can only be described as highly significant with almost a quarter of a million pounds worth of cocaine and ecstasy taken off our streets.
"The damage that these drugs can do to individuals and communities is well known. It only takes one ecstasy tablet or one experiment with cocaine to cause death. Too many families have been impacted by such tragedies.
"The social effects that these drugs can cause to communities is also well known with addictions leading to higher levels of crime and higher levels of social care and rehabilitation needed for users," he added.
"Combining the ongoing work of the PSNI in removing these drugs supply routes along with education programmes for our young people is the key to eradicating drug misuse.
"By showing people the damage that taking or dealing drugs can cause we can help them to make informed choices."
Three men and a woman have already appeared in court after the police seized the cocaine and ecstasy on Wednesday during a PSNI Organised Crime Branch operation which involved a car being stopped on the Grosvenor Road in west Belfast and subsequent house searches.
A judge refused to grant any of them bail, describing it as among the gravest alleged offences of its kind.
The suspects face a combined total of 30 charges, including possession with intent to supply and conspiracy to supply Class A drugs.
The four accused were remanded in custody to appear against next month.

PSNI Investigating Fatal Collision Near Bready, Co Tyrone
An investigation has been launched following a fatal road traffic collision near Bready, Co Tyrone. At around 1.40pm on Sunday, 07 April, police responded to a report of a single vehicle collision on the Victoria Road. When police arrived it was discovered that a white Seat Leon had left the carriageway close to the junction with Grangefoyle Road.
