Boy Finds Pistol In School Playground

A 10-year-old boy found a gun in his school playground and brought it home to show his parents.

The weapon was discovered in the playground on Parkhill Primary School in Antrim on Friday afternoon.

It is believed the child thought it was a toy, however his parents contacted the police immediately.

Sinn Féin Councillor Noel Maguire has rounded on those responsible for leaving a gun in the grounds of Parkhall Primary School.

Cllr Maguire said: "The discovery of a gun in the grounds of a local primary school brings to mind the horror of the incident in September last year when a child picked up a pipe bomb in the grounds of St. Comgall's Primary and carried it into the school.

"Here again, this time in Parkhall Primary, we have a child placed at serious risk of harm or worse, having picked up a gun which he then carried home.

"Children are inquisitive by nature and in this case a child has lifted what he probably thought was a toy. I can only imagine the horror felt by his parents, and which I am sure is shared by the whole community.

"Both these incidents are a clear indication that there are people in our midst who, regardless of what they claim to represent, have a callous disregard for the most vulnerable of our society. These thugs have to be seen for what they are and given up to the police."

The police are asking anyone with information to contact them immediately.
