Crucifix Killer Jailed For At Least 20 Years

Dublin pharmacist Karen Walsh has been jailed for a minimum of 20 years for murdering her neighbour Marie Rankin on Christmas Day in 2008.

Walsh, 45, showed no emotion as Mr Justice Hart sentenced her at Belfast Crown Court for what he described as a sustained and brutal attack on an elderly, defenceless and frail woman.

Walsh, a mother of one and originally from Galway, had visited the 81year-old with a bottle of vodka after a row with her husband.

Walsh lashed out at her with a crucifix which had been given to Mrs Rankin as a wedding present.

According to Northern Ireland’s state pathologist, the victim had bruising on her chin in uniform with the crown of thorns on Jesus’ head, and 15 broken ribs which was possibly caused after her death.

Walsh left the court still protesting her innocence but the judge said she showed no remorse and posed a significant risk to the public.
