Ombudsman to investigate Omagh bombing allegations

The claim that police had received prior warning about the Omagh bombing is to be investigated by the Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman.

The investigation by Police Ombudsman Nuala O’Loan has been prompted by newspaper articles claiming that security forces were told about the possibility of an attack in the days leading up to the August 1998 car bomb in Omagh which killed 29 people. The claims are reported to have been made by a former security force operative, and the announcement of a formal investigation comes just two days after the third anniversary of the Omagh atrocity.

The bomb exploded on August 15 1998, and security forces have consistently denied having detailed knowledge of the Omagh bombing carried out by the Real IRA.

The allegations have dismayed the relatives of those killed and the survivors who recently gathered to commemorate the dead and the injured on Wednesday August 15.

With no one apprehended by security forces the relatives of the victims recently launched legal action against five men with alleged links to the dissident paramilitary group. (SP)
