Seaside Body Shock
A probe is underway at a seaside flat in Co Down where a body was found at the weekend. The grim discovery was made at Burrendale Park Road in Newcastle on Saturday morning with the police and forensics officers examining the scene.
Empey Seeks IRA Cash From Libya
Ulster Unionist peer, Lord Empey has vowed to continue to demand action by the Government to secure compensation for victims of IRA attacks carried using weaponry supplied by the Gaddafi regime. "I have recently received answers to a number of Parliamentary Questions which I tabled in the House of Lords and I have subsequently written to Lord Howell of Guilford, Minister of state for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs to raise a number of concerns. I am concerned that [the Govt] is apparently playing a 'supportive' role to various victims groups but is not involved with the National Transitional Council/interim government in Libya," he said, adding, "The fact is that not all victims are organised or have the means to organise themselves into campaigning groups, and indeed many victims may be unaware of the attempts to obtain compensation from both the former Libyan regime and indeed the current one. The people who suffered at the hands of the IRA using weaponry supplied by Gaddafi [must] get some recompense for the vast amount of damage causes."
Cash Van Robbed
A cash box was stolen by two men who attacked the crew of a cash-in-transit van on the Falls Road at the weekend. It happened at about 9.45am on Saturday and saw the CIT man hit on the back of the head - although he was wearing a helmet when he was attacked. The PSNI said the robbers then made off in a green Nissan Primera car in the direction of Anderson Park. It was later recovered in the Navan Green area.
Taken To Book
The NI Libraries Minister Carál Ní Chuilín has welcomed an Assembly motion on community libraries. The Minister said: "I would like to thank the members for raising this issue and I look forward to the debate in the Assembly. It is important that MLAs are afforded an opportunity to discuss the public library service," she said. Referring to the Review on library opening hours presently being taken forward by Libraries NI the Minister added: "At present there is a consultation on a reduction of library opening hours and I would encourage local people to engage in this consultation and to shape the future of their library services."
