CBI Calls For Youth Employment Focus

Improved recruitment chances for young people in the UK need to be achieved through a targeted approach, according to the head of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) on Wednesday.

Speaking ahead of the CBI conference, taking place this week, the organisation's director general, John Cridland, said enhancing the recruitment prospects of 16 to 24-year-olds is an "absolute priority".

He called on the government to set aside some £150 million for incentives and initiatives, such as setting up tax relief systems.

Mr Cridland said: "If you give a [National Insurance] rebate to small companies if they recruit 16 to 17-year-olds, or 16 to 24-year-olds who have been out of work for six months you will give those young people a push up the priority list."

His calls were backed by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation's Ed McRandal, who said that the recent figures that showed a rise in youth unemployment to more than 1 million, clearly demonstrated that the situation was at a critical point.

"It is important that the recruitment industry gets involved in the fight against youth unemployment," he said.

"With recent gloomy job figures, it is important that we highlight good practice within the industry to demonstrate the positive role that recruiters continue to play."
